Information
about the Village of Fontana.
Fontana is a suburb
of Victoria, the city of Gozo. The name of this village
means “spring”, whilst local people know
this place as “Triq Ta’ L-Ghajn”,
meaning “the road to the spring”.
This village got this particular name
since there is a fresh water spring. It is because of
this spring that people started to inhabit the area.
It was during the 16th century that an arched shelter
was built over the spring, to suit the people who used
the fresh water spring for to wash their clothes and
other facilities. Most of Xlendi fishermen used to live
in Fontana, since it was not far.
The parish church of Fontana is dedicated
to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was consecrated on
29th January 1905.
