A
Brief Information about the Village of Kercem.
Kercem is a peacefully
tucked away village from the busy and hectic world,
even though it is closest to the Island’s capital
city, Victoria. It is just a few minutes away by walk
from the city. The road that leads to Kercem, passes
through the upper part of Lunzjata Valley, which is
one of the island’s most enchanting areas. This
placed is shared with Gozo’s main city. It is
found half way between Ghar Ilma Hill and the valley
of Xlendi. At the valley’s banks, there are natural
springs dating back to 1698. A small chapel is found
at this Valley, tucked under a cliff, dedicated to the
Annunciation of Our Lady. It was rebuilt early in the
16th century. Also, within this appealing valley, there
is Ghar Gerduf, where the Christian catacombs of the
3rd/4th century are settled.
Kercem’s square is marked by
a traditional scone cross. One can still see the remnans
of its ancient past, like the depiction of oriental
crescent or half-moon.
Il-Mixta Hill is also one of Kercem’s
possessions. It is believed to be the site of the first
human settlement of the Maltese Islands.
The Kercem parish church is dedicated
to Our lady of Perpetual Succour and Saint Gregory the
Great. The present parish church (1851) was recently
replaced of an older chapel.
