A
Brief Information about the Village of Munxar.
Munxar is a suburb
of Sannat, lying to south of the island. Its name is
the Maltese old meaning for “bucksaw”. This
village offers breathtaking views of Ghancija valley,
on the Munxar side, which forks into Xlendi valley,
on the Fontana side. These two valleys join together,
ending up at Xlendi Bay.
Of prehistoric remains located in this
village is Ta’ Marziena Temple, standing in the
limits of Tac-Cawla, Victoria. These temples date back
to approximately the Ggantija phase. But unfortunately,
they could not be admired by anyone, besides an archeologist.
The parish church of Munxar is dedicated
to St. Paul Shipwrecked, like that of Marsalforn.
Situated near this village, to the
south-west of Gozo is Xlendi Bay, the most picturesque
and romantic place on the island. It is a typical fishing
village and one of the most sought-after tourist resorts,
particularly during summer times. In this beach resort,
one can choose to swim either in a small sandy beach,
or by getting into the sea, off the rocks, where there
water is quite deep. The caves, rugged reefs and rock
formations are ideal for scuba diving, also for beginners.
A white statue of the apostle Saint
Andrew, patron saint of fishermen, dominates a little
menqa (small harbour), where fishing boats create a
wonderful blend of colours when they are moored. Its
precipitous sides, bordering the inlet of the harbour
side can be reached by walking past the statue, proceeding
to a steep flight of steps cut into the rock. When reaching
the top, one can admire the absolute view of Xlendi.
Xlendi watchtower, lying on the opposite
promontory, jutting out of the waters, dominates superb
sea views. This massive tower, built in 1650 by the
Knights of Malta, was able to resist gunpowder shots.
Xlendi is also equipped with tourist-related
amenities, such as diving centres, restaurants lining
the seafront, hotels, and also the bus transport to
Victoria.
