A
Brief Information about the Village of San Lawrenz.
San Lawrenz lies
on the western part of Gozo, on a hilltop just below
Ta’ Dbiegi, which happens to be the highest hill
on the island. The name of this small village is took
from an old chapel, dedicated to the Roman martyr, St.
Lawrence, which once stood in the area of this charming
village.
San Lawrenz is one of the most villages
that managed to keep its traditional and rural lifestyle.
On the road between Victoria and San Lawrenz, the Gozo
Crafts Village is situated.
The present parish church was built
between 1888 and 1897, on the site of the old chapel.
The church is dedicated to St. Lawrence.
In the limits of San Lawrenz, reached
from the village square, one can reach the magnificent
Dwejra Bay. A place which attracts both local and foreign
people for its magnificent breathtaking scenes. A small
chapel is to be found in this area, which is dedicated
to St. Anne. Also, a well preserved watch tower is found
which stretches back to 1652. Its role was to defend
the bay and the Fungus Rock (a typical plant grew on
it, which was famous for healing purposes). The Fungus
Rock, together with the Azure Window are magnificent
natural rock formations.
Dwejra Bay is very popular, both for
swimming and for diving. The regions of the superb Inland
Sea and Dwejra Bay are ideal swimming spots. Whilst,
regarding diving, there are the striking dive sites
of the Inland Sea, the Blue Hole and the Azure Window.
