A
Brief Information about the Village of Sannat.
Sannat is sited in
the southern part of the island of Gozo. It probably
took its name from an Arabic family name. It is considered
to be the main village regarding the making of lace.
One can still see elderly women making fine shawls,
table mats or lace-edged handkerchiefs.
This village possesses several prehistoric
remains and outstanding views of the countryside and
the sea. Within the limits of Sannat are the remarkable
steep precipices of Ta’ Cenc, where a variety
of wild plants is to be found. Here is also situated
a primitive prehistoric temple named Ta’ l-Imrarra
Temple. Besides this are the remains of three dolmens,
made out of limestone. Below Ta’ Cenc is the striking
Hanzira valley.
The parish church of this village is
dedicated to St Margaret Martyr, and its construction
begun in 1718, on the site of a smaller church. This
church has an excellent altarpiece painted by the well-known
local artist, Stefano Errardi.
