Zebbug rises on a
hill to the north-west of Gozo. Its particular name
is Maltese, meaning “olives”. This unique
village is built on two hills, named Ta' Abram and iz-Zebbug
which are joined together by a narrow ridge. This village
boasts of spectacular panoramic views consisting of
the countryside surrounded by coasts and the Mediterranean
sea.
Zebbug is very well known for its onyx
(bronze age silo pits), which was discovered by a farmer
in 1738, right next to this village on a steep hill
named Ta’ Kuljat.. This place is also very well
known for its high quality hand-made lace (called “bizzilla”
in Maltese), for weaving and also for hand-made woolen
blankets.
Its village church is dedicated to
the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. One of the

the Immaculate Conception. Something very worthy to
look at, which is to be found in this church is the
titular painting painted by Francesco de Dominics. The

Marsalforn, belong to the village of
Zebbug, is very well famous to be a fishing location
and is the most popular summer resort of Gozo. On clear
days, when there is no fog in the atmosphere, the island
of Sicily could be seen from the hills of Zebbug, and
even from Marsalforn. In summer time, Marsalforn becomes
the most populated place of the island. Its composite
name is derived from an obsolete Arabic verb, meaning
“harbour of caves hollowed by the sea”
It is an ideal place for all kinds
of entertainment, offers various spots for swimming,
water sports and diving for the most adventurous. One
can also enjoy quiet walks along the promenade, which

is also very popular for its restaurants, which offer
both local and international cuisine.
The church of Marsalforn is dedicated
to St. Paul Shipwrecked. It was built since 1730. A
previous church was raised in the fourteenth century.
It has then been rebuilt and enlarged several times.
